【EAF Steel】Steel Market Transactions Improve, EAF Costs Rise
This week, transaction sentiment in China's steel market improved noticeably. As funding for some projects was gradually put in place, demand for steel products increased significantly, accelerating inventory destocking. Some specifications even experienced temporary shortages. As of May 14, the average rebar price in China reached 3,390 RMB/ton, up 37 RMB/ton compared with the end of last week.
On the raw material side, domestic scrap steel prices first increased and then weakened this week. Scrap arrivals increased compared with the previous week, but the market continued to be affected by tight scrap invoice supply, which further compressed EAF steel mill profits and limited production growth. As of May 14, the capacity utilization rate of 135 EAF steel mills in China was 49.42%, down 0.28% from last week, while average daily EAF steel output reached 325,200 tons.
Overall, current ferrous market demand remains relatively moderate. Steel exports from January to April also declined 9.7% year-on-year. The recent strengthening in steel prices has been driven more by rising raw material costs, such as the implementation of the third round of coke price increases. However, EAF steel mills are still being disturbed by scrap invoice supply issues, making it difficult to overcome the cost disadvantage in the short term. It is expected that during the second half of May, China's EAF steel production and profits will continue to face pressure.
